Mamie and Molly Mouse

Mamie was born with a very short tail, and this made her very cross, because her sister Molly had a long glossy tail.

When Mamie went to bed, she made up her mind that she, too, would have a long tail. Mamie lay under her pink blanket, wondering what she could do. “I know,” said Mamie at last, “I will do tail exercises!”

The very next morning, Mamie started. Ten times to the left, then ten time to the right. SWISH, SWISH, SWISH, went her tail, until poor Mamie panted for breath.

Mama Mouse was in the kitchen toasting cheese for breakfast. “Whatever is that noise!” she said.

”It’s Mamie. She is trying to grow her tail as long as mine!” said Molly. They all laughed, between mouthfuls of toasted cheese. Mamie knew they were laughing at her, and this made her even more determined to do her exercises.

”You will never have a tail as long as mine!” said Molly.

”I shall. You will see!” said Mamie. “We will measure our tails a month today.”

At last came the great moment. All the family gathered in the sitting-room. “Tails together please!” said Papa. And you know – they were the same length! They all danced up and down with delight, and Molly kissed Mamie saying: “Oh, Mamie, I am happy that you, too, have a beautiful long tail!”
