The Hyena who couldn't Laugh

There was once a hyena who couldn’t laugh.

His family all tried hardest to make him laugh.

”Look, Harry!” said his sister Hetty. “That tree is just a funny old man. Ha! Ha! Ha!”

”I think it looks just like a tree,” said Harry gloomily, and he did not even smile.

”Oh, brother!” said the smallest hyena, Henry, “did you see that silly face the monkey was making? I never saw anything so comical. Ha! Ha! Ha!”

”I thought it was just his usual face,” said Harry sadly.

”We must do something to make him laugh,” said kind little Hetty.

She thought for a while, and then she picked some big green leaves and made herself a funny hat.

”That hat doesn’t suit you at all,” said Harry, and he walked away.

Just then, Hetty spied a banana.

”Just look at my big banana,” she called to Henry, and ran to show it to him.

Whee-ee! Hetty slipped on the banana skin, and fell head over heels.

Henry ran to help her – and then they heard a sound.

”Ha! Ha! Ha!” It was Harry laughing. “I never saw anything so funny in my life! You did look funny, Hetty. Ha! Ha! Ha!”

”I don’t see anything to laugh at,” said Hetty as she picked herself up. “That’s not what I call FUNNY!”
